If you live in Hyderabad, your day is likely fueled by the relentless energy of gig workers. From the food delivery rider navigating the afternoon sun to the cab driver weaving through Hitech City traffic, they keep our city moving. Yet, finding a simple place to rest, recharge a phone, or use a clean washroom has always been a massive challenge for them.
That is officially changing.
In a major step forward for urban worker welfare, the Cyberabad Municipal Corporation (CMC) has teamed up with Amazon India under Project Ashray. Together, they have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish specialized Gig Workers Rest Stop Porta Cabins across the city.
The best part? These facilities are entirely free of charge and open to gig workers from all platforms—whether they ride for Zomato, Swiggy, Uber, Ola, or Zepto.
Where Are They Popping Up?
The project is kicking off across five crucial hubs in the Cyberabad and Serilingampally zones:
-
Kondapur
-
Tellapur
-
Patancheru
-
Bharathi Nagar
-
Chandanagar
More Than Just a Roof: What’s Inside?
These aren’t just empty sheds. Funded and maintained entirely by Amazon India as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, these modern porta-cabins are built to offer genuine comfort:
-
Rest Areas & Lockers: A safe space to sit down, catch a breath, and securely store belongings.
-
Hygiene Facilities: Fully equipped washrooms and even shower facilities to cool off during sweltering days.
-
Tech Support: Free Wi-Fi connectivity and dedicated phone charging points so they never lose a gig due to a dead battery.
-
Basic Amenities: Access to clean drinking water.
-
Eco-Friendly Design: The entire setup features integrated waste management systems and runs sustainably on solar energy.
“Gig workers form an integral part of Cyberabad’s rapidly evolving urban ecosystem, and Project Ashray is intended to improve their comfort and well-being by providing dedicated rest facilities.”
— Dr. G. Srijana, CMC Commissioner
The agreement was finalized in the presence of key leaders, including Jayesh Ranjan (Special Chief Secretary, MA&UD), CMC Commissioner Dr. G. Srijana, and the Zonal Commissioner of Serilingampally.
As Hyderabad continues to grow as a global tech and economic powerhouse, initiatives like Project Ashray remind us that true progress means taking care of the people who power our daily lives. Next time you order a meal or book a ride, know that a much-needed pitstop is finally waiting for the person delivering it.
