A few days ago, Ajitha Talari, a school principal in Hyderabad, walked into a local café for a casual music jam session. A couple of hours later, she walked out with a brand-new friend.
While the evening’s playlist was packed with crowd favorites, it was the nostalgic, sweeping chords of Singarala Pairulona from Thalapathi and Naa Cheli Rojave from Roja that instantly sparked a connection between two complete strangers.
“We were both smiling and looking at each other while singing together,” Ajitha recalls. Spotting the duo’s infectious energy, the event organizer even urged them to dance—and they happily let go of their inhibitions right there on the floor.
Ditching the Spotlight for the Chorus
This isn’t an isolated incident. Across Hyderabad, a fresh wave of community jam sessions is uniting strangers over familiar tunes, quietly fostering a passionate and deeply connected music scene.
But don’t mistake these gatherings for your typical weekend nightlife. Hosted primarily in auditoriums and cafés with a strict no-alcohol policy, these sessions differ fundamentally from traditional open mics or karaoke nights.
| Feature | Traditional Karaoke / Open Mics | Hyderabad’s Community Singalongs |
| The Focus | A single performer under a high-pressure spotlight. | Collective harmony where everyone is part of the band. |
| The Vibe | Can feel intimidating or performance-driven. | Relaxed, judgment-free, and rooted in pure nostalgia. |
| Environment | Often hosted in noisy, alcohol-centric bars. | Safe, sober, and community-focused spaces. |
Pure, Unfiltered Joy
Instead of a lone singer taking the stage while a crowd watches, these events invite the entire room to sing their hearts out in a relaxed, low-pressure atmosphere. It’s less about vocal perfection and more about shared nostalgia.
The result? A space where people feel safe enough to lower their guards, forget the stress of the week, and simply connect.
“Since no one is judging our singing style, we sing purely for the joy of it,” adds Ajitha, smiling at the memory. And that pure joy reflects on everyone’s faces.
