How a Public Hospital in Hyderabad Made Sci-Fi Healthcare Free for 1,000 Families

When people talk about Hyderabad, the conversation usually turns to gleaming tech parks in Gachibowli, world-famous biryani, or the historic arches of the Charminar. But quietly, inside the busy corridors of Punjagutta, a quiet healthcare revolution has been unfolding—one that merges cutting-edge robotics with public welfare.

The Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) has achieved a major milestone: successfully completing 1,000 robotic-assisted surgeries in under three years. Even more remarkable, over 90% of these high-tech procedures were performed completely free of cost for patients through government welfare initiatives like Aarogyasri and the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund (CMRF).

Demystifying "Free" Precision Care

Robotic surgery is normally associated with high price tags, often costing lakhs in private corporate hospitals. The technology allows surgeons to operate through micro-incisions using robotic arms, resulting in:

  • Minimal blood loss and reduced postoperative pain
  • Shorter hospital stays
  • Significantly faster recovery times

For a low-income family, access to this level of surgical precision without financial burden is life-changing.

"This initiative has bridged the gap between advanced medical innovation and public accessibility, proving that top-tier healthcare isn’t reserved only for those who can afford private care."

By the Numbers: Where Precision Met Need

Led by NIMS Director Dr. Rahul Devaraj, the multidisciplinary effort spanned several key departments:

| Department | Procedures Completed | Key Surgeries Performed | | --- | --- | --- | | Urology | 590 | Radical prostatectomies, bladder cancer resections, robotic renal transplants, and pediatric reconstructive procedures. | | Surgical Gastroenterology | 248 | Complex hepatobiliary, pancreatic, colorectal, and upper GI operations. | | Surgical Oncology | 162 | Organ-preserving and nerve-sparing cancer surgeries (ovarian, uterine, colorectal). |

What’s Next for Telangana Public Healthcare?

Following praise from Health Minister Damodar Raja Narasimha and Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, the state government is moving to expand this model. Robotic operation theaters are currently being established in:

  1. Gandhi Hospital
  2. The new Osmania General Hospital campus
  3. Upcoming TIMS hospital facilities across the city

Having recently passed the 2,000 kidney transplant threshold as well, NIMS continues to redefine what public sector healthcare can accomplish.
